Guide bearing is a kind of bearing mounted on the rear of crankshaft or on the centre hole of flywheel, whose main function is to guide and prevent radial runout of the first shaft in the state of clutch disengagement. When the engine's rpm passes through the flywheel, clutch housing, pressure plate, and clutch disc to reach the first shaft, the high speed performance of the bearing is required due to the extremely short changeover time of the automated racing gearbox. In addition, the choice of bearings and lubricants is crucial, as they need to withstand very high speed gradients.
In the case of damage, noise and rattling will occur at start-up. As wear increases, the rattling will diminish or disappear. This condition seriously affects the life of the first shaft bearing of the gearbox and can lead to loose bearings and, in severe cases, gearbox rattles in neutral, even to the point of requiring dismantling of the gearbox assembly, which can be very expensive to repair.
